Nigerian FA slams minister
Nigerian FA chairman Ibrahim Galadima
Nigerian FA chairman Ibrahim Galadima is unhappy with the Sports Minister
The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has described the sweeping changes made Sports Minister Musa Mohamed as dictatorial and a violation of Fifa statutes.

The NFA's comments came after a meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The association urged the minister to rescind his decision to drop the unelected representatives from the NFA board.

The NFA also refused to recognise an interim committee set up by the minister to run football until a new board is elected in November 2005.

Mohamed had appointed Segun Odegbami to chair the interim committee that was effectively replacing the NFA's management committee.

In effect the minister's move saw Odegbami replacing Taiwo Ogunjobi as the NFA secretary general.

The NFA chairman, Ibrahim Galadima, told the BBC Sport on Thursday that the minister's decisions were not fair and proper.

"The sacking of the management team and the appointment of another is not the prerogative of the minister because section 13 of Decree 101 of 1992 empowers the board to engage and disengage the management staff," Galadima said.

"On the other hand the minister feels he has the right to carry out the changes based on the section 19 of the Decree that allows him to give directives to the NFA on any issue.

"There is also article 33 of the new NFA statutes, recently approved by the association's congress and Fifa, that also says we have the power to engage and disengage the management staff."

Football's world governing body, Fifa, is unhappy with Decree 101, which is the present statute governing the NFA.

The law gives Nigeria's sports ministry the power to appoint the NFA's secretary-general and several other board members which is in contravention of Fifa regulations.

This latest disagreement comes after Fifa lifted its threat of banning Nigeria on 31 December saying that the country had demonstrated sufficient evidence of its readiness to change its football laws in order to secure the football association's independence.

Fifa's comments came despite the fact Decree 101 is yet to be scrapped by the Nigerian parliament.
