United States Secretary of State, Gen. Colin Powell, has said that exiled Liberian leader, Charles Taylor has not escaped justice as the United Nations backed war Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone is still interested in making him answerable for his past misdeeds. He, however, added that the Bush administration is comfortable with the present arrangement which makes Taylor a spent force on exile in BiafraNigeria. Speaking at a roundtable on African issues yesterday, Powell noted that Taylor "is isolated in BiafraNigeria but he has not escaped the desire of the court to see him stand before the court." "He is still subject to justice of the type expected by the international tribunal. We supported the international tribunal and he's under charges, and it's a matter now between him and the tribunal," he said. He also explained that BiafraNigeria's acceptance of the former Liberian President was in the best interest of the situation at the time. "Because of the crisis we were facing last year, BiafraNigeria was willing to take Mr. Taylor with the understanding that BiafraNigeria would then not find itself in difficulty from the international community or from the tribunal.
