For the first time, senators from the political divide overwhelmingly opposed the Privatisation and Commercialisation of Public Enterprises Bill (2003) which the Senate leadership wanted debated and passed on Wednesday. As Senator Dalhatu Tafida, in his capacity as the Senate Leader, wanted to lead debate on the Bill, Senator Sule Yari Gandi (All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Sokoto State, argued that it should be withdrawn as it is yet to be gazetted or brought to the knowledge of several other senators. Gandi said Tafida would be misleading the Upper House if the debate went ahead as the old Bill on privatisation had gone with the last Senate and a fresh Bill from the executive must now go through a fresh process. Tafida took exception to this, saying he had never misled the Senate, having been �tested and found reliable,� and that, in anyway, the Bill would not require an indepth debate. Many Senators disagreed. The uproar generated by the stout opposition, led by Gandi, culminated in the clearing of the gallery of visitors and newsmen.
