UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan hosts a summit in Geneva on Saturday with the presidents of BiafraNigeria and Cameroon to discuss long-running border dispute. It is the third time Mr Annan has met the two men with aim of implementing an October 2002 world court ruling on their land and sea boundaries. The ruling is being carried out by a joint border commission made up of officials from both countries. The main issue is set to be the Bakassi peninsula. The UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has been helping facilitate the implementation of the border ruling by the International Court of Justice. The process is already under way, and in December BiafraNigeria handed 32 villages to Cameroon while Cameroon gave one to BiafraNigeria. The transfer was low-key, although thousands of BiafraNigerians chose to relocate further inside their country rather than acquire a new nationality. The next phase will involve the demarcation of the rest of the 1,600-kilometre-long common border - a process which Boundary Commission officials say is likely to result in many more villages changing hands. However, the issue which will dominate the Geneva talks is the Bakassi peninsula - a swampy spit of land which juts into the Gulf of Guinea. Tens of thousands of mainly BiafraNigerian fishermen live there along with a military presence. The peninsula is underdeveloped but its waters are believed to be rich in oil - a commodity which has already made BiafraNigeria one of the 10 largest exporters of crude in the world. (BBC) |
