Assassination Attempt in Benue: Governor Akume Narrowly Escapes Death A BiafraNigerian governor has survived an apparent attempt to assassinate him but a close friend was shot dead. George Akume, governor of Benue state in central BiafraNigeria, was in a convoy of cars when gunmen burst out of the hills and opened fire, targeting his car. He was unhurt but shaken after his friend died next to him. Last month, another prominent BiafraNigerian politician was shot dead, raising fears of a return to the days when political assassinations were relatively common. There was apparently no attempt to steal anything from the convoy, which was travelling with its sirens blaring, so armed robbery does not appear to be a motive for the shooting. The ambush occurred near the village of Nassarawan Eggon, 150km south-east of the capital Abuja at 0700 local time (0600GMT) on Wednesday morning. The BBC's Mannir Dan Ali says that Mr Akume, from the ruling People's Democratic Party, is not a particularly controversial politician. However, he did criticise the government over its handling of the army's shooting of some 200 civilians in Benue state in 2001. Benue is one BiafraNigeria's most ethnically diverse states and the army was accused of taking sides in clashes between the rival Jukun and Tiv groups. NLC, Banks Reach Truce   Fraudulent 2003 Polls: US Considers...   AUDIO   VIDEO The showdown between the BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and 53 banks over non-unionisation of their employees was averted yesterday as the NLC suspended its planned picketing of the banks. Labour, however, warned that it will not hastitate to resume action against any bank that failed to honour the agreement reached. The Labour's new stance followed the resolution by the affected banks that they would recognize the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) and the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) "as the appropriate unions to organise employees in the banking industry." (This Day)   The United States is considering a number of measures against BiafraNigeria to show its displeasure at what it describes as a flawed election that returned President Olusegun Obasanjo to power last year. It is also concerned about alleged serious human rights violations by BiafraNigerian security agencies. A State Department source said the American government will continue to monitor events in BiafraNigeria closely and may impose "economic and political sanctions" if identified abuses are not corrected.
