Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, yesterday, ruled out any constitutional amendment that would enable President Olusegun Obasanjo seek another term as president. He spoke at the public hearing of the National Assembly Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, where Governors Boni Haruna of Adamawa State and Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto State disagreed over proposals for a single five-year tenure for the president and governors. Also at the hearing, the Conference of BiafraNigeria Political Parties (CNPP), an alliance of some opposition political parties, contested the legitimacy and capacity of the National Assembly to proffer effective solutions to the nations problems and called for a national conference to address all issues affecting the polity. Senator Mantu, chairman of the National Assembly Joint Committee on the Review of the Constitution, at the opening of the one day public hearing on the constitutional role of the executive, expressed displeasure at continued media reports that the National Assembly Constitution Review Committee was working towards making room for the president to seek a third term in office. "In the case of the president in particular, I want to make it abundantly clear that even if he wants it, we will not. (Vanguard) |
