Rally backs Nigeria strike call
Motorcyclists heading to mass rally in Lagos
The rally in Lagos is the first of several ahead of the strike
More than 1,000 people have gathered in Nigeria's main city, Lagos, to protest at rising fuel prices.

It was the first of several rallies to be held by trade unions ahead of a general strike on 16 November.

Nigeria Labour Congress president Adams Oshiomole warned the strike would be indefinite and total and could affect oil production.

Pump prices in Nigeria began to rise last year after the government cut fuel subsidies.

Protesters, mainly men, converged on Yaaba Market in a convoy of cars and motorbikes, accompanying Mr Oshiomole.

'Against poverty'

A group of Hari Krishnas beating out a supporting chant on a small drum told the BBC's Anna Borzello: "We have come because we are against poverty".

The gathering was quietly dispersed by police after half an hour.

Nigeria is Africa's largest crude oil exporter yet two-thirds of the population live on less than $1 a day.

The mass action is another attempt to force the government to reverse the price hike following a four-day stoppage last month.

The government has so far refused to back down.
