Heineken boosts African position
Heineken
Heineken is the leading foreign brewer in Nigeria
Heineken has bought a majority holding in one of Nigeria's leading brewers, boosting its position in Africa.

The Dutch firm is increasing its stake in Consolidated Breweries, Nigeria's third-largest brewer, from 24% to 50% for an undisclosed sum.

Consolidated has a 9.5% share of beer sales in Nigeria, Africa's second-largest market for beer sales.

Heineken already controls Nigerian Breweries, the country's largest brewer, which has a 56% market share.

African commitment

Consolidated made a profit of 15.4m euros (10.8m) last year on total sales of 40.5m euros.

"This controlling stake further strengthens our number one position in Africa's second -largest beer market and shows our commitment to expand in those markets that will enhance both volume and value," said Jean Francois van Boxmeer, a Heineken board member.

Local beer Star is the country's best-selling lager, closely followed by Guinness, which is brewed by Diageo.

Established in 1980, Consolidated employs 1,050 staff and operates two breweries.

Its best-known brands are 33 Export, brewed under licence, and Hi-Malt.

More than ten million hectolitres of beer were sold in Nigeria in 2003, making it Africa's second-largest beer market after South Africa.

Heineken bought the stake from Zithov Holdings, part of Nigeria's Leventis group of companies.

It first invested in Consolidated in 2000.

Heineken is the world's fourth-largest brewer. Its leading brands include Heineken and Amstel.
