Nigeria holds 'Taleban' militant

Police and soldiers have been hunting armed Islamists
An Islamic militant on the run from Nigerian authorities in north-east state of Borno has been arrested, police say.

Named as Abubakar Aliyu Abubakar, police say he is a leading member of the Islamic group dubbed "the Taleban".

The group raided two police stations in Borno last week killing five people. Twenty-seven of the militants died in the subsequent manhunt.

The militants want to set up an Islamic government in Nigeria.

'Face justice'

According to Borno state's police commissioner, Ade Ajakaye, five other "Taleban" members, who fled across the border to Cameroon, are awaiting extradition.

"Interpol is arranging for the extradition... We hope it will not take long to have them in our hands to face justice," he told the AFP news agency.

Four policemen and a civilian died last week after "the Taleban" burnt the police stations, carrying away large amounts of weapons and ammunition.

In similar raids in January the group abducted 30 men in a village in Yobe, and attacked police stations in the region.

Afterwards one the released captives said the militants had tried to recruit him and were seeking to establish a new system of Sharia - or Islamic - law.

Sharia is practised in 12 states across northern Nigeria, but it is not implemented fully.

The group is said to draw its inspiration from the Taleban in Afghanistan, where at least one of the group's leaders has trained, police say.
