Nigeria oil militia not disarming
Mujahid Dokubo-Asari being carried by his supporters
Asari has received a hero's welcome in Port Harcourt
The leader of a militia in Nigeria's oil-producing region has said his group will not lay down its weapons, as agreed with the government.

Mujahid Dokubo-Asari accused the Nigerian aothorities of not keeping promises to discuss his demands.

Mr Asari says he has returned to the capital, Abuja, for more talks after mobilising supporters.

He demands more of Nigeria's oil wealth for the inhabitants of the Niger Delta, one of the country's poorest areas.

Mr Asari also said that the weapons used by his supporters did not belong to him and so he could not promise to hand them over.

Deliverance

He last week threatened "all-out war" on oil companies in the Delta, seen as one reason why oil prices reached a record high.

After talks in the capital, Abuja, he agreed to use "democratic means" to continue his fight.

He has received a hero's welcome since returning to Port Harcourt at the weekend, and has held several rallies.

"Elhaji Asari is a great freedom fighter," one Port Harcourt resident told the BBC's Network Africa.

"He will deliver us from our suffering," said another.

Nigeria is the world's seventh largest exporter of oil, but 70% of the population live in poverty.
