Nigeria union leader 'released'
Adams Oshiomhole, NLC president
Oshiomhole has led national several strikes
Adams Oshiomhole, the president of Nigeria's main union body, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has been freed.

An NLC official told the BBC they had spoken to him and were expecting to see him soon.

Mr Oshiomhole was picked up by the secret police at the airport of the capital, Abuja, early on Saturday.

The union has called for a general strike on Monday over rising petrol prices - a result of the government decision to lift fuel subsidies.

Mr Oshiomhole has led two widely observed general strikes in the last 18 months over fuel price increases.

Nigeria is the largest producer of crude oil in Africa, but two-thirds of the population live in poverty.

The NLC's acting general secretary, Salihu Lukman, told the BBC Mr Oshiomhole had been released: "We don't know when he was released or where, but we have heard from him and expect to see him soon."

Mr Oshiomhole was picked up by state security service operatives on the tarmac of Abuja's domestic airport, bundled into a car and driven away for questioning.

The state security services say Mr Oshiomhole was allowed to go home on Saturday, after answering questions over what they describe as a misunderstanding with field operatives.

One hour after the arrest, the NLC president told the BBC by mobile phone he had been released.

He asked to be called back half an hour later, but his phone was then switched off.

NLC officials, however, insisted they had not seen him and voiced what they call "legitimate concerns" for his life and safety.
