Yep, Sugar Hill Gang started it all when they borrowed some jazz flavors and R&B; hooks dropping the smash hit "Rapper's Delight" while Grand Master Flash got on the edge sending "The Message" from New York's Radio City Music Hall.
Now the bastards and rats at Hidden Beach Recordings just released "Unwrapped, Vol 3" of the "Unwrapped" series. In this continuation where the previous two left off, is the extended remix of Eminem's immensely popular track "Lose Yourself," from the film 8-Mile. The song begins just like the Eminem version, but this particular track has a distinct Mississippi-Delta-blues supported by an awesome violin solo straight from bad boy Wu-Tang's "Forever."
Other tracks include Busta Rhymes' "I Know What You Want," with Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg and the Neptunes' "Beautiful," the organ-driven remake of Lauren Hill's classic.
Check this collection out because it is a truly special with dedication to three of hip-hop heroes, Tupac, Biggie and Jam Master Jay.--a winning trip down memory lane.
Just pop it up, cuz I still live here!

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 6 Funk legend Rick James, best known for the 1981 hit ''Super Freak'' before his career collapsed in a cloud of violent drug charges, died Friday. He was 56.
James died in his sleep at his residence near Universal City, apparently of natural causes, said his publicist, Sujata Murthy. James lived alone and was found dead by his personal assistant, who notified police, she said. The exact cause was not immediately known. ''There'll be an autopsy and we'll find that out shortly,'' Murthy said. With long hair elaborately styled in braids or Jheri curls, James was one of the biggest R&B; stars of the 1980s, composing danceable rhythms and passionate ballads that gained a wide following. Aside from ''Super Freak'' which MC Hammer used a decade later as the backing track for his rap smash ''U Can't Touch This'' James' hits included ''Mary Jane,'' ''Ebony Eyes'' and ''Fire and Desire,'' a stirring duet with Teena Marie. ''He was really fantastic, he was a creator,'' singer Little Richard told MSNBC. Toward the end of the '80s, James' fame began to fade as he became embroiled in drugs, legal problems and health troubles. In 1993 he was convicted in two separate cases of assaulting women. The first case occurred in 1991, when prosecutors said James and his girlfriend tied a woman to a chair, burned her with a hot crack pipe and forced her to perform sex acts during a cocaine binge at his West Hollywood home. James was free on bail when the second assault occurred in 1992 in James' hotel room. He served more than two years in Folsom Prison. In 1997 he released a new album, but a year later he suffered a stroke while performing at Denver's Mammoth Events Center, derailing a comeback tour. In 1998 he also underwent hip replacement surgery. James was not married and names of survivors were not immediately available, Murthy said. Funeral arrangements were being planned.

Rick James did not invent rock. He gave it a little makeover a no color line audiences. He did it by mixing in rock and punk music with the funky styles of James Brown and George Clinton.
Read his last interview with ASCAP.
quote:RICK JAMES LAST EUR INTERVIEW: Late funk legend talked about ASCAP award, Prince, hip hop, Chappelle, and his legacy.
Rick James (Feb. 1, 1948 - Aug. 6, 2004) (Aug. 9, 2004) *An autopsy Saturday failed to reveal the exact cause of death for Rick James. However, his three children daughter Ty, and sons Rick Jr. and Tazman said Friday through a spokesman that they believe his heart just simply gave out.
James, 56, died in his sleep Friday morning at his home near Universal City, California.
He gave the world such funk staples as Super Freak, Give It To Me Baby and Mary Jane, and was just as innovative behind the scenes penning songs for Teena Marie, the Mary Jane Girls, the Temptations, and Smokey Robinson.
It was his writing talent that caught the attention of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), and ironically, allowed him the chance to experience a lifetime achievement award before it was too late.
Last June, James accepted the honor at the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in Beverly Hills, where he capped his acceptance speech with the infamous phrase from the Dave Chappelle Show, Rick James bitch! to thunderous applause from the crowd. At the ceremony, EUR Lee Bailey spoke to him for what would become the last time.
"This is probably the greatest accolade I've ever won," James said. "This is icing on the cake. Its not only from my peers, but these are the people who really know and appreciate the song, whether its for the Mary Jane Girls, Temptations, myself, or Smokey Robinson, they know."
At the time of his death, James (born James Ambrose Johnson Jr.) was preparing to release a double-album of almost 30 songs to coincide with his 25th anniversary as a successful artist. The project, which he said would come through his own Ma Records label, was also part of the singers newfound peace after years of battling drug and alcohol addiction. He credits his 1998 stroke as Gods way of slowing him down.
"When that stroke happened to me in Denver, I wasn't doing drugs,"he said. "I wasn't doing anything. I might've had half a glass of champagne, but I wasn't doing anything because I was on parole; I was being [drug] tested, too. So when it happened, it was so bizarre. I broke two blood vessels on the back of my neck.
I was laid up in the hospital for six and a half months, I went to a three- or four- month rehab, then I was in the bed for a year and a half. I just was depressed. I didn't think I'd ever be able to perform again. But God sent this angel, and she came and did some bodywork on me. I couldn't walk backwards, I couldn't walk ideways, I couldn't write my name, and next thing I know, I was running across my room. I believe He just sat me down for a minute to pay attention."
The upcoming double-album was also supposed to promote the return of real music, which James felt was lost on today's young artists. James said:
"Me and Quincy [Jones] had this discussion, and its a really sad thing, in actuality - music is dead. There will be no other Earth Wind and Fires, there'll be no more Billie Holidays, Sly and the Family Stones or Parliament Funkadelics. People get together now and they don't know anything about music. And I look at the artform of rap, the way they spit it, and some of them are brilliant, and they're poets, but some of it is just verbal diarrhea."
James cited recent shows with the Ohio Players and Parliament Funkadelic, and even the new Musicology material from his longtime rival Prince as examples of funks staying-power despite todays unhealthy R&B; diet. Never in my dearest life did I think I would ever like Prince, James said, before cracking up. I'm just so grateful for all the brothers out there in funk because its a resurgence, a revolution, a reincarnation ,its a total blooming of something that people thought had died.
And speaking of Prince, James was still a little cheeky about the artist formerly known as The Artist, who reportedly sparked the rivalry when he kept upstaging the braided singer while opening for him on tour.
"I don't have any grudges," James said of the Purple One. "He's a great musician. I'm just not into songs like, If I Was Your Girlfriend" or me and my sister used to do this all night. But no, he's changed. He doesn't have a sign anymore. I guess there's a little bit of jealousy still there, but I know I'm better looking - and I'm taller."
Plans are still underway for James life to be told on the big screen. Comedian Dave Chappelle, whose skits of the singer on his Comedy Central series The Chappelle Show have contributed to James' recent popularity surge, will reportedly play the funkateer in a motion picture drama about basically sex, drugs, funk and roll, Rick said.
As for Chappelles Rick James parodies, he insisted that the skits, which feature interview clips of him providing commentary, were a collaborative effort. He said: "People always say, What do you think about David clowning you? I say, clowning me? We created that! I thought they were funny as hell because it made people laugh. I laughed."
A Rick James book was also said to be in the works at the time of his death " a full account of his childhood in Buffalo, New York; his Catholic school upbringing; the talent show at age 15 that turned him onto performing; his descent into cocaine; the infamous crack pipe assault, the penitentiary; his stroke; and his struggle to put his life back on track.
"I feel God has got me here for a reason," he said. "I give myself another year, and then I'm gonna retire from the music business and do something else I have in mind thats more spiritual. God has saved me from so much, - overdoses and [the wrong] people - now Hes lining me up with just the right people. I gotta do what I gotta do, then I gotta do His will.
I look around and we're all getting older, and it just brings a tear to my eye, because you know what? We're still here, you know? Ain't nobody saying how long this is gonna last. But right now, today, I'm enjoying it. This is all I ask, you know. Tomorrow is not promised."

Sassy soul singer Angie Stone is back, and she is in love. "Stone Love," her 17-track tribute to romance and broken hearts, bursts with deep grooves and retro sounds but lacks the musical diversity one would expect from such an accomplished artist as Stone. So many 70s era samples.
"No Roots," the new LP by Europe's premier dance music collective Faithless, has been vibrating on the airwaves lately. The group has incorporated some sophisticated sociopolitical themes into their sound, taking on everything from the British Parliament and Halliburton, to globolization and the exploitation of the Third World. Now you see what I mean. Go for it guys!

Just dropping by. Being buying stuff by Raydio recently. I'm not much of a fan of Ray Parker, Jr.s voice though. Anyway I'd like info please on Jerry Knight. Apart from being in Raydio, I know he worked with The Jets and did that track with "Ali There's No Stopping Us," which I love. What albums did he do in Raydio, and did he do any solo stuff or any other things besides those listed above? Did he play any instruments in Raydio?
Holla at a curious sista.
Cheers, Cassandra

Welcome to the forum and sorry for the belated response. Also, thanks for the PM, 'preciate it.
I was no fan of Ray Parker, Jr. either. Well, bassist Jerry Knight was a founding member of Raydio and remained with them until 1980. Knight had previously played withh Bill Withers before being invited by Ray Parker, Jr to join Raydio.
After the groups first hit "Jack and Jill," with Knight on lead vocals, he left for a solo deal with A&M; Records in 1980. In 1983 he left A&M; and joined Polydor. He also enjoyed some success as a composer, writing "Tonight" for the Whispers and "Desire" for Philip Bailey and Phil Collins. He produced Howard Hewitt's "Challenge," and did bass work on many sessions, among them, Jeffrey Osbourne, Dynasty, Lakeside, Carl Carlton and Change.
For your information, fasten your seatbelt for it's really, really hot in here.

Anyone got "Dance With My Father CD?" I may be one of the few here who doesn't have this CD, but I was listening to it at the record store yesterday and it has some sweet stuff on it. I really like the re-make of "The Closer I Get To You" with Beyounce. Nicely done.

Whatever happened to the group Loose Ends? I loved that group. They took me through the 80s, along with others. They were great. I went to many a club dancing to their music and I saw them a couple of times live in clubs. People said they were a one wonder hit. That's not true.

You've been asking a lot of questions lately about some soul classics. What's up with that, girl?
Well, let's see, Beyonce and "Closer I Get To You" featuring Luther Vandross is one of the best lyrics of this former sensational Destiny's Child performer who grew up playing and listening to his daddy's stack of LP's,--the old-school kind of stuff--and who's still being managed by her father Mathew Knowles. The lyrics tells it all:
The closer I get to you The more you make me see By giving me all you got (tell me more) Your love as captured me
Over and over again I tried to tell myself that we Could never be more than friends But all the while, inside, I knew it was real The way you make me feel
I think I like the remake of the club jam "Love To Love You Baby" remix. I know you've checked it out. If not, go get it. Also, she notes her favorite song is Donnie Hathaway's "Song For You" and favorite movie "Shaft," not the remake of Samuel L. Jackson's "Can You Dig It." Now you see why she's Daddy's girl?
The late eighties group Loose Ends wasn't a one hit wonder like your pals would make you believe. Actually, they had a string of hits and they did had sessions with the group Club Nouveau.
As far as I know, Hot Chocolate was an interracial British funk, not pure funk, and soul group with huge hits in the seventies. The original line up: Lead singer, Erroll Brown; Harvey Hinsley, guitar; Larry Ferguson, Keyboards; Tony Wilson, bass; Tony Connors, drums; and Patrick Olive on congas. The single "You Sexy Thing" was a Top Ten R&B; and Pop hit in 1975.
But in late 1976, the cats and producers at Big Three studios, denying any controversy in the group, found more talent in the bassist Wilson, who went solo and came out with a smash hit "I LIKE YOUR STYLE" in the Fall of 1976 before Christmas. Olive replaced Wilson. My fav. Hot Chocolate song: "Heaven Is On The Back Seat Of My Cadillac." Check it out.

What's all the haggling in politics about, man? You all been tripping lately. Just kidding.
Well, Eric Donaldson, according to sources from Fastlaneintl, a reggae profile website, was the leading falsetto voices in his era. Though, I'm no fan of Donaldson, his vibe and lyrics "Cherry Oh Baby" was included in Jimmy Cliff's "Harder They Come" Soundtrack. Since you popped it up, I'm gonna check out the Kent-Jamaican born singer in the old glory days of the 70's. Now, that tells me the kind of girls you hanged out with growing up as a hippie. But anyway, enjoy the "Cherry Oh Baby" lyrics and make sure you get the album soundtrack "The Harder They Come." It's been remastered, waxed and digitized on CD.
Cherry oh, Cherry oh, baby, Don`t you know I`m in need of thee? If you don`t believe it`s true, What have you left me to do? So long I,ve been waiting, For you to come right in. And now that we are together, Please make my joy run over. (Chorus)
Oh oh ee oh oh ee oh, Oh oh ee oh ee oh ee oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Yah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Cherry, oh, Cherry, oh, baby, Don`t you know I`m in love with you? If you don`t believe I do, Then why don`t you try me? I`m never gonna let you down, Never make you wear no frown. If you say you love me madly, Then I will receive you gladly. (Chorus)
Cherry, oh, Cherry, oh, baby, Don`t you know I`m in love with you? If you don`t believe I do, Then why don`t you try me? I`m never gonna let you down, Never make you wear no frown. If you say you love me madly, Then why do you treat me badly. (Chorus)
You probably could get more info at the following places, including "Land of my Birth" lyrics. Never heard of that one though.

I'm listening now to Lalah Hathaway's new CD, "Outrun The Sky." So far through track 4, it's breathless...her voice is what you'd expect...the melodies/rhythms are smooth and soothing...even on the moderate tempo cuts. Nothing like real instrumentation.
And like her previous offerings, at times with certain inflections, Donny's voice comes out. Makes you definitely reflect.

Yep, it was one of those days hanging out around the Ivy League craps with a bunch of of white folks who got nothing in their brains but rock and roll. I mean, the freaky body piercing students who had no idea rock and roll was stolen from the blues in the heydays of great guitar works and Jimi Hendrix coupled with jazz beats of Coleman Hawkins, J.J. Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Art Blakey and all that jazz in the swing era.
Too much hype and alcohol in the hostels, if you know what I mean. They have to deal with it. Hip-Hop is here to stay. You feel me?

Thompson,
Music is color-blind, raceless, and void of any prejudice whatsoever.
Make no mistakes: rock'n'roll is a combination music, combining blues, country and european folk. It was a white american dude by the name of Bill Haley who first took this new form of music to the world stage with the 1955 superhit "Rock around the clock", which stands as a rock anthem till today. So don't be bragging about some "Jimi Hendrix" drug junky whose guitar play is way less than average.

I now feel like nothing is original anymore. The remixes and digital age has definitely done something really powerful to people's minds and how they see the music of today. Back in the day when talents were discovered through hard work, I mean writing and reading musical notes, music was original and made a whole lotta sense. Not anymore.
Yep, enter any recording studio these days and you will find absolutely no instrument. From the strings to the woodwinds, none can be found in most recording studio of these days because Hip-Hop has been programmed. Walk in to any studio and start making beats and 'am gonna go with the program. You feel me?
On Reggae vibes, Jamaican Reggae legend Justin Hines who was dignosed with cancer recently, passed away. Known for the hit "Jezebel" and "Carry Go Bring Come," he is survived by his wife, Peaches and three grown kids.
The only surviving dynamic talent from the original Wailers band, Bunny Wailer, has a new DVD where he reexamines the "Black Heart Man."
The legendary Marcia Griffiths is celebrating her 40th anniversary in music with an album of newly recorded favorites and recent hits that highlight the "Shining Time" of her life to present. From her beginnings at Studio One Label, to her time with the legendary Bpb Marley as one of the I Threes and again with her early smash hit "Electric Boogie," Griffiths proved herself to be reggae's top female icon.
