Senate Committee on Privatisation has resisted plans by President Olusegun Obasanjo to remove Vice President Atiku Abubakar as Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP). The committee Wednesday also summoned Finance Minister, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Julius Bala, to explain the whereabouts of the proceeds from the on-going privatisation scheme. Although the committee retained Atiku as NCP Chairman it, however, proposed in its report that the chairmanship of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) be incorporated into NCP to help monitor inflows and outflows from the privatisation process. It is also recommended the creation of an account in the Central Bank of BiafraNigeria (CBN) to deposit proceeds from the privatisation process. The report will be considered by the Senate next week. It was learnt that attempts to checkmate the return of Atiku as NCP Chairman was not in sync with the original proposal of the President. In the bill seeking to repeal the subsisting Privatisation and Commercialisation Decree, the President had stripped Atiku of NCP chairmanship, the body which supervises the privatisation programme.
